Aïyb Dieng is a
Senegal ese drummer and percussionist. He has worked and recorded frequently withBill Laswell .He was born and raised in Senegal. By the age of 14 he was playing professionally in a band that consisted of nine relatives.
Dieng received his first album credit on
Brian Eno andJon Hassell 's 1980 "Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics", playing percussion onconga drums and a clay drum called "ghatam ". [Although Dieng refers to his instrument as "chatan" (which appears to be an altered spelling of "ghatam"), it is actually a U.S.-made instrument that is more similar to a Nigerian "udu ".]Soon after, he worked with
Masabumi Kikuchi on Susto. Dieng also played onMick Jagger 's solo project, "She's the Boss ". Other noteworthy credits include work withYoko Ono (singer/composer/artist), Bill Laswell (producer/bassist/guitarist),William S. Burroughs (beatnik author),Bob Marley (reggae singer) andGinger Baker (jazz-rock drummer).In his early years in the U.S., Dieng taught African drumming at the
Creative Music Studio inWoodstock, New York . He went on to perform withKarl Berger atCarnegie Hall andAvery Fisher Hall . The "chatan" was introduced by Dieng. It was played onHerbie Hancock 's 1984 album "Sound-System". He wrote the material on his 1997 album "Rhythmagick".Discography
