- 2006 European cold wave
The 2006 European cold wave was an unusual
cold wave which resulted in abnormal winter conditions over much of Europe. This marked a period of unusual weather over much of Europe where southern Europe saw cold and snow while places in northern Norway saw abnormally mild conditions [http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/news/04022005news.shtml] . The phenomenon started onJanuary 20 inRussia with temperatures below -40°C and extended to Central Europe. Parts ofPoland ,Slovakia , andAustria saw temperatures drop below -30°C. The cold had resulted in the deaths of up to 50 people in Russia and a significant death toll in both in most of Eastern Europe including Moldova and Romania. anticyclone responsible for the cold temperatures in Central Europe brought snow to much of southern Europe.Algiers saw their first snow in over forty years and the snow had brought about icy and slippery conditions on the roads catching many off guard [http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/news/28012005news.shtml] . Much of Greece also saw snow andAthens had a significant fall of snow and the snow had cut off more remote outlying areas and the island ofLimnos also saw measurable snow. Balearic Islands saw snow and freezing temperatures which resulted in closure of theairport onMajorca [http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/news/27012005news.shtml] .On January 29th,
snow fell inLisbon for the first time in 54 years. Snow began falling in the early morning in seaside towns likeFigueira da Foz in central Portugal, and the storm reached record south locations such asAlgarve . Other towns with a record snowfall wereLeiria ,Santarém ,Évora ,Setúbal ,Portalegre ,Sesimbra ,Palmela ,Fátima ,Pombal ,Abrantes ,Torres Novas andOurém . Highways and roads were closed, and one hundred people were evacuated from their vehicles in Montejunto. The storm caused electricity to be cut inElvas and other parts of theAlentejo region. InLisbon , the city government demanded that subway stations remain open overnight, so that homeless people could find shelter. Much of the south had a temperature of 0°C at midday, while the north, contrary to expected, was with much higher temperatures, 5-10°C.
