It has a population of 2,957. In 1901, it had a population of 1,985. The origin of the name may come from Neapolis.

History
Noli was an independent republic from 1193 until 1797, the smallest one under the five so-called "Maritime Republics". In 1239 it became seat of a bishop; later on the diocese has been united with that of Savona as the Diocese of Savona-Noli. The Napoleonic invasion in 1797 put an end to Noli's sovereignty.

It is a town and comune of considerable antiquity and has an ancient church of S. Paragorio, once the cathedral, a Romanesque basilica dating from the 11th century with interesting works of art.

Personalities
- António de Noli, Italian nobleman and explorer, discoverer of some Guinea territories and Cape Verde islands on behalf of the Portuguese crown[2]. Born in Genoa 1419, "family with origins in Noli or the Castle of Noli"[3].
