John Carberry

John Carberry

John Joseph Cardinal Carberry (July 31, 1904—June 17, 1998) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church.

Carberry was born in Brooklyn and ordained a priest there in 1929. In 1956 he was named bishop of Lafayette, Indiana. He succeeded as Bishop in 1957 upon the death of Bishop John George Bennett. In 1965 he was named bishop of Columbus, Ohio and in 1968 he was made Archbishop of St. Louis, Missouri. He was elevated to the status of Cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1969. He was known as having faithfully implemented in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis the decisions taken at the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council in an at times difficult period in the life of the Catholic Church in the United States.
