The first version of the series' pilot, which was intended to air, had the show titled "The Four Mrs. Buchanans" since the character of Bree wasn't married to Jesse Buchanan (played in this first appearance by
Paul Johansson ) until the end of that episode. Ultimately, the show's permanent title would have taken effect beginning with the second episode. This original pilot never did air, however, mainly because of the amount of raunchiness in the scripts (lots of attention was paid especially to Bree's sexually charged one-liners and Delilah's cleavage). It has been speculated that CBS wanted to sanitize the show's content and alter some of the character traits before it hit the air. The aired pilot had some scenes re-shot and the "5 Mrs. Buchanans" title in place from the start.Shortly after its premiere, CBS announced it had given the series a 5 episode pick-up, in addition to the standard 13 initially ordered. However, only 17 episodes were aired and are known to have been produced.
Eileen Heckart stated in an interview at the time that CBS had picked up more episodes of the show with the intention of moving it from Saturday nights, where it was faltering, to Mondays following "
Murphy Brown ". The network ultimately changed its mind after ordering "Cybill " as a mid-season replacement, though the seventh episode of "The Five Mrs. Buchanans" did air once in this timeslot as a "special preview" on31 October 1994 .External links
