Simon Elwes

Simon Edmund Vincent Paul Elwes (29 June, 1902 - 6 August, 1975) was an English painter and scion to the Cary-Elwes recusant family.

Elwes (pronounced "El-wez") "The Bastion". "Time". September 30 1946.] was the son of Gervase Cary Elwes (1866 - 1921), diplomat and tenor who was killed in a railway accident while on American tour, [ Taylor, Deems. "Gervase Cary Elwes."Music Lovers' Encyclopedia. 5th ed. 1950. ] and Winifride Mary Elizabeth Feilding, daughter of Rudolph William Basil Feilding, 8th Earl of Denbigh and 7th Earl of Desmond (1823 - 1892).

He married the Hon. Gloria Rodd, the daughter of Rennell Rodd, 1st Baron Rennell and had three sons, including painter Dominick Elwes, father of Cary Elwes, Damian Elwes, and Cassian Elwes. Elwes was romantically linked with the married socialite Lady Penelope Aitken, but despite the controversy his marriage endured.

He served as a Lt. Col. in the 10th Hussars during World War II. At age 43, a near-death stroke paralysed his right painting hand and body, and he learned to paint with his left. "The Bastion", "Time", September 30 1946.]
