Mount Michael Benedictine Abbey and High School is a Benedictine monastic community in Elkhorn, Nebraska, USA. It is dedicated to following the example of Saint Benedict as written in the Benedictine Order. The school was founded in 1953 by the monastic community of Immaculate Conception Abbey in Missouri. Mount Michael began as a high school and junior college for men preparing for the priesthood and was called St. John's Vianney Seminary. In the spring of 1970, the monks reformed the school into Mount Michael Benedictine High School, a Catholic residential high school with a focus on college preparatory curriculum. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha.

Student body

The school has about 210 students. Most reside in the Omaha and Elkhorn area. International students are enrolled from South Korea, Mexico, Spain, China, Rwanda, Sudan, Canada, France, Bahamas and Thailand.[citation needed] Typically, these students reside on campus from either Sunday night or Monday morning until Friday afternoon. Many students are now considered 7-day boarders and remain at school for the entire weekend. Currently, Sean Cox is the International Dean. Additionally, the introduction of a day-student program has slightly increased and diversified the student population since the fall of 2002.

Athletics

The school mascot is a Knight. The school has 12 main sports, which consist of Football, Cross Country, Tennis, Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming, Fencing, Bowling, Track & Field, Soccer, Golf, and Baseball. Much of the school's initial success was under the tutelage of Jim Kane, who created the Knights' athletic programs in the 1960s.[citation needed]

The school's sports teams have won 20 state championships[citation needed]:

  • Football: Champions - 1982, 1990.
