The International School of the Hague is an international school located in the vicinity of Kijkduin in The Hague, The Netherlands. It comprises a primary school and a secondary school, and has approximately 1050 students of over 75 different nationalities. The International School of the Hague is known as ISH for short. It is one of the best schools in the Netherlands and has won many awards. The ISH has also been helping and organizing charities year to year.

Information

in June 1985.

The ISH caters for the large international community of The Haue. Many parents work for one of the many international organizations and companies located in The Hague, such as the, European Patent Office, Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Royal Dutch Shell or embassies.

chool Profile

The International School of The Hague (ISH) is a leading international school for children and young people of all nationalities aged 4 to 18. A co-educational day school with boarding facilities available nearby, the school is continuously developing its educational and community services, inspired by a strong international ethos. It is classified as an IB World School. The focus is very much on learning which is reflected in our curricula and facilities. The school is located in a new, specially-designed building, expanding the school towards a full-service learning centre in contact with the Dutch community and in line with the 21st century. The school also has generous use of sports fields in the vicinity. The ISH is subsidised by the Dutch Ministry of Education and subject to Ministry regulation. Thanks to this support, the school is able to offer high quality international education at highly competitive fees. Enrolment in Autumn 2007 is 1045, (944 last year) with 380 in Primary School and 665 in Secondary School. Childcare facilities are also offered on site.

Children in the Primary School follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) from the age of 4-11 years. Children are assessed against agreed outcomes through formative activities.

Students in Years 7 through 11 (age 11-16) now follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). The ISH is an IB MYP accredited school. The MYP involves courses in eight compulsory areas: first language, second or additional language, mathematics, science, humanities, arts (visual and performing), technology and physical education.

In the final two years of school all students study for the full IB Diploma, an internationally recognised preparation for university. The Diploma is also an externally moderated school-leaving document. Entrance to the IB course is dependent upon MYP or equivalent academic success. The IB Diploma Programme is a challenging course that demands high performance across six subjects in addition to other components, such as Theory of Knowledge, a 4000 word Extended Essay and Community Action Service (CAS).

For more information about the IB MYP or Diploma Programmes, see the website at http://www.ibo.org.

All lessons, apart from foreign language courses, are taught in English. The study of Dutch is compulsory through to Year 11. The ISH supports mother tongue education, current provision including Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. English as an Additional Language (EAL) and support for Special Educational Needs (SEN) are available in school.

Location & History of the new building

After many years in its location at Theo Mann Bouwmeesterlaan 75, the ISH announced in 2002 that it would move to a new location, Wijndaelerduin 1, in Kijkduin. The move for both the high school and the primary school was originally scheduled to take place at the beginning of the 2006/2007 school year, however for the high school it was eventually postponed until October 2006 but the primary school did move in. The high school postponed its move again until January 2007.

On April 21, 2007 Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands opened the school officially.

Curricula

The primary school offers the International Primary Curriculum for students between the ages of 3 and 11 (Reception to Year 6), while the secondary school offers the IB Middle Years Programme for students between the ages of 11 and 16 (Years 7 - 11) and the IB Diploma Programme for students between the ages of 16 and 18 (Years 12 and 13).

EAL (English as an Aditional Language)

For those students whose native language is other than English, or for those with little familiarity with the language, the ISH offers English support lessons in both “beginner” and “transition” levels.

The English B (formerly English as an Additional Language or "EAL") is designed to enable students to achieve accurate and confident use of English at a variety of levels. It provides a balanced programme of listening, speaking, reading and writing development, enabling students to become familiar with the language in a practical context, exposing them to a variety of challenging material and stimulating them to give their own opinions and participate in discussions and drama.

In such ways students use the language for real purposes and behave as language users, rather than mere acquirers of language rules. However, this is not to imply that accuracy is seen as being of lesser importance. The programme provides a comprehensive coverage of the English grammatical system while simultaneously encouraging students to learn the language as fluent users in practical, everyday situations.

English Computer Room

There is extra provision in Years 7, 8 and 9 for students who need extra language support. These students receive three additional hours a week, which include using interactive computer assisted language learning programmes. This self-study time, supervised by an English B teacher, is intended to allow students to address individual areas of difficulty

Crash courses in English for beginners are provided in the Learning Support Centre (LSC).

Library: A Busy Place During Lessons and Breaks

Each year we also compile data about how frequently the library is booked to be used by teachers with their classes, either for research projects or reading and exchanging books. We were quite pleased that more and more teachers come to the library with their students. In the new building we are able to handle even two classes at the same time. Thanks to our larger capacity, the average number of classes has grown to an unprecedented high of 11 classes per week in the last six months since we have been keeping the statistics beginning in January 2002. Of course, it is not just the fact that we have more space that the teachers are bringing the classes to the Library. The teachers and students find the library an attractive and a rich resource place, both in electronic and print materials. Our 12 computers and 60 seats are almost always occupied and the SmartBoard is frequently used to teach students about reliable sources of information for their projects. In addition for part of the year, the media lab was closed so many lessons “migrated” to the Library which was a welcomed turn of events. When there are not enough computers, we see that the students are happy to use the books and magazines and discover how useful and fun they can be.

Since the Library is a place of work and study, just as in a classroom, please do not talk loudly, drink or eat, chew gum, or wear hats.

Borrowing Library materials: • Present your school identification card at the main desk (if you are a new student) or know your student number. • Borrow books only for yourself and do not exchange library books with other students. • You may borrow most books for 3 weeks. • The number of books and other library materials that can be borrowed depends on your grade level:Years 7-9 may borrow up to 3 books at any one time Year 10 may borrow up to 4 books at any one time;Year 11 may borrow up to 5 books at any one time;Years 12-13 may borrow up to 12 books at any one time. • Additional books may be borrowed for special projects with the permission of the librarian. • If a book is not returned on or before the date stamped, a fine will be charged at €0.05 per day per item. • A book may be renewed, only if there is no outstanding fine or no reservation for that item. • You are personally responsible for the materials you check out. • If a book or other library material is lost, damaged or not returned to the library at the end of the school year, you will be charged a fine of €12.00 plus the appropriate amount for its replacement.

Using Computers:The computers in the Library are meant for students' educational use, such as searching the catalog, and using various CD-ROM's or the Internet. If you need help using any of the computers or software, please ask for assistance at the main desk. Any time you would like to print, please see the librarian first. Please print with care and do not waste paper!

Using the Photocopier:A photocopier in the library is intended for copying of library materials only. Copies can be made free of charge. For other purposes, please use the photocopier located by the aula.

The librarian reserves the right to suspend borrowing privileges and use of the library to any student. Parent volunteers are always welcome!Donation of books or other materials are also appreciated.

CAS & C&S

The school, as part of the IB program, requires the students from years 7 to 11 to spend between 15-30 hours of community work (C&S). Whether it may be to cleaning the school building, working in the primary school or working in an old people's home, in most cases it must be checked with the class mentor. The students in the IB diploma programs are required of a minimum of 150 hours for Community And Service (CAS) activities within the two years of the IB program. These need to be at least 50 hours of Creativity, 50 hours of Action, and 50 hours of Service, spread out over at least three activities in each category, however it is not unusual for a student to do more than that.
