January

* SS "Wilston" ran aground at Wicca Bay, Pendeen. All crew lost.

April

April 18

* SS "Paris" FRA Caught fire and capsized in St. Nazaire harbour. Scrapping did not occur for almost a decade due to World War Two.

June

June 1

* HMS "Thetis" sank whilst on trials, 99 crew killed. Salvaged, recommissioned as HMS "Thunderbolt", sunk by Italian corvette "Cicogna" on 14 March 1943 with loss of all hands.

* SS "Athenia" (UK): World War II: Sunk by "U-30 250 miles from Northern Ireland.

* ORP "Wicher" (navy|POL): World War II: Sunk by German bombers in the port of Hel.

* ORP "Jaskółka" (navy|POL):World War II: minelayer, sunk by German bombers in the port of Jastarnia.

* ORP "General Haller" (navy|POL): World War II: Sunk by German bombers in the port of Hel.

* HMS "Courageous" (navy|UK):World War II: aircraft carrier, sunk by "U-29" off Northern Ireland.

September 22

* SS "Martti Ragnar" (FIN): World War II: steam freighter, sunk by "Unterseeboot 4" in Skagerrak.

* ORP "Komendant Piłsudski" (navy|POL): World War II: Sunk by her own crew.

October 8

* "U-12" (navy|Nazi Germany): World War II: Sunk near Dover in the English Channel by a mine hit

October 9

* "SS Mount Ida" UK ran aground on Ower Bank, North Sea. All crew rescued by lifeboat but one later died from his injuries.

* HMS "Royal Oak" (navy|UK): World War II: Revenge class battleship, sunk by "U-47" in Scapa Flow

October 25

* "U-16" (navy|Nazi Germany): World War II: Sunk by Royal Navy trawler HMS "Cayton Wyke" and patrol vessel "Puffin"

* HMS "Blanche" (navy|UK): World War II: B class destroyer, sunk by mine
