HMAS Cairns (J183)

The first HMAS "Cairns" (J183), named for the city of Cairns in Queensland, was a Bathurst class corvette built by Walkers Limited at Maryborough in Queensland, launched on 7 October 1941 by Mrs. R. D. Walker, wife of the works manager of Walkers Limited, and commissioned on 11 May 1942.

During World War II, "Cairns" served with the British Eastern Fleet from November 1942 to January 1945. Following this, she was assigned to the British Pacific Fleet.

HMAS "Cairns" paid off on 17 January 1946, was transferred to the Royal Netherlands Navy and renamed "Ambon". The ship was transferred to the Indonesian Navy on 6 April 1950 and renamed "Bentang".
