KCPM is a MyNetworkTV affiliate located in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It broadcasts on UHF channel 27 and on cable channel 9 throughout the Red River Valley region. KCPM also has a sales office located in Fargo, North Dakota.

KCPM also rebroadcasts on low-power station KVNJ-LP, channel 33, in Fargo, ND, and holds a construction permit to rebroadcast on translator K35HT, channel 35, in Jamestown, ND. KCPM and all of its rebroadcasters are owned by Guaranteed Impressions Group (G.I.G.), known on-air as Central Plains Media.

General information

KCPM is a semi-satellite (partial rebroadcaster) of KCPO-LP in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, though it airs local commercial inserts and sometimes has different programming. KCPO-LP is still partially rebroadcasted on KCPL-LP in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The station dos not have a local newscast, and its programs includes syndicated programs (off-network comedy, court shows, talk shows, and movies), infomercials and religious programming past midnight. Popular syndicated shows on KCPM include "The Jerry Springer Show", "Maury", and "South Park". KCPM also simulcasts KSTC broadcasts of MSHSL high school football, hockey, and basketball tournaments.

History

KCPM signed on the air in 2003 as the first full-time UPN affiliate in North Dakota (Fox affiliate KNDX/KXND of the western region of the state aired UPN programming after primetime), replacing Minneapolis-St. Paul's KMSP-TV on cable after it became a Fox affiliate.

Digital Television

Because its original construction permit was granted after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [http://www.transmitter.com/FCC97115/chanplan.html] , the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, on or before February 17, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, KCPM will be required to turn off their analog signals and turn on their digital signals (called a "flash-cut").

MyNetworkTV

On January 24, 2006, The WB and UPN networks announced they would merge. The newly combined network would be called The CW, the letters representing the first initial of its corporate parents CBS (the parent company of UPN) and the Warner Bros. unit of Time Warner. The merger would take effect on-the-air on September 18, 2006. In response to the merger, News Corporation (the owner of Fox) launched another network called MyNetworkTV on September 5, 2006.

KCPM rejected The CW and affiliated with MyNetworkTV. In September 2005, KCPM replaced the UPN logo in its logo with the logo of Central Plains Media. The new KCPM MyNetworkTV logo was introduced in August 2006, and KCPM dropped UPN entirely on September 4, 2006. WDAY-TV launched a digital subchannel to carry The CW, which replaced cable-only station WBFG on September 18, 2006.

The station filed a notice to the FCC to cease terrestrial operations February 15, 2008 and filed notice on May 22, 2008 to suspend operations. According to FCC records, the station's owners have suspended operations on financial grounds, due to the economy. The station went back on the air on September 5, 2008. Fact|date=September 2008
