John Duncan (footballer)

John Pearson Duncan (born Lochee Dundee 22 February 1949) is a Scottish footballer and football manager.

Playing career

He played as a centre-forward for Dundee, Tottenham Hotspur (1974-1978) (101+2 league appearances and 53 goals), Derby County (1978-1981) (35+1 league appearances and 12 goals), Scunthorpe United (3+6 league appearances) and the Scottish Football League.

Management career

He has managed Scunthorpe United (1981-1983), Hartlepool United (1983), Chesterfield (1983-1987) and (1993-2000) and Ipswich Town (1987-1990). He took over as manager of Ipswich Town in the summer of 1987 following the departure of Bobby Ferguson. He is currently manager of Loughborough University's non-league football side in the midland combination premier division.

His biggest managerial achievements came at Chesterfield, where he achieved Division Three playoff glory in 1995 and reached the F.A Cup semi finals in 1997. He was sacked three years later upon their relegation back to Division Three.After leaving the game, Duncan took up a career in schoolteaching, and is now coaching the loughborough university non league side.
