Kings College, Madrid

History

King’s College is a British curriculum school in Madrid for day pupils and boarders. It was founded in 1969, and is open to students of all nationalities.

From the outset there was a clear decision not only to provide an English curriculum, but also to establish a school in which students would enjoy the best of British educational traditions. Numbers rose rapidly, from 70 pupils in 1969 to nearly 500 in just five years. King’s College soon outgrew its premises and by 1976 ten houses of differing size and design were in use in Chamartín. After occupying these temporary premises for some nine years, the main school moved in 1978 to its present purpose-built premises in the pleasant residential area of Soto de Viñuelas to the north of Madrid. The first section of the building was opened by the British Ambassador to Spain Sir Antony Acland, KCVO, CMG, and dedicated by the Papal Nuncio in Spain and the Anglican Bishop in Europe. Since then many improvements and additions have been made to the building and facilities, including:

- a residential wing for boarding students (1985)
- a 25m heated swimming pool (1994)
- an Early Learning Centre (2002)
- a brand new Infant School in Chamartín (2004)
- an auditorium with seating capacity for over 350 people (2005)
- a Music School with six rooms for individual tuition (2006)
- King's College School, La Moraleja (2007)
Since its foundation King’s College has grown in strength and prestige. This is reflected in a variety of ways including the steady growth in student numbers to over 1900 at the present time. The continuous expansion and improvement of its facilities over the years has made the school one of the best equipped of its kind.

Facilities

King's College is a modern school with two computer laboratories fully equipped with computers and smart boards. A recent development has been the introduction of a wireless WIFI network which seeks to promote "anytime, anywhere" learning through laptops that can be taken virtually anywhere.

Another facility worth mentioning is the newly built auditorium, which has a seating capacity for 300 people and is equipped with air-conditioning, a high-resolution projector and professional control booth.

The school also has a separate area for ballet and contemporary dance and a fully built tatami in which Judo classes take place.

The School has boarding places for both boys and girls

Fees

The school is expensive with an average of 10,000€ a year for an average secondary pupil.

Curriculum

The school offers a curriculum in English, along with complimentary Spanish classes. In Year 12 there is a choice between the British A-Levels and the Spanish Bachillerato. The School is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference and of the Council of British International Schools.
