Tucker's Town, Bermuda

Tucker's Town is a small settlement in St. George's Parish, Bermuda, located in the small part of the parish on the territory's main island, close to the shore of Castle Harbor.

Originally intended as a true town and port, the exposed location proved to be less hospitable than was hoped, and few settlers were attracted to the planned town. In the early years of the 20th century, the area was a predominantly black, thriving, independent, community. However, in the early 1920s, the all-white Government of the day uprooted the black inhabitants – by way of eminent domain – “in the name of tourism.” The town attracted the attention of wealthy foreigners, and today it is one of the most exclusive parts of the territory. It is strongly favoured by American and European millionaires, who enjoy the climate, surroundings and tax-free status of the islands. Owners of property in the area include Ross Perot, Silvio Berlusconi, Michael Bloomberg and the reputable Doyle family, who made their initial fortune rum running during prohibition.

Access to the primarily residential area is restricted. Residents and invited guests must first pass by a guard house. People who do not live in Tucker's Town are not generally allowed in the eastern part of the town, or onto the Tucker's Town Peninsula which extends along the southeastern edge of Castle Harbor. The town also previously included a private beach used by the Marriott Castle Harbour resort. The resort has re-opened as Tucker's Point Club, an enclave of estate and town homes, custom homes and private residence club villas. The Club includes a Roger Rulewich-designed golf course, a tennis club and beach club. The Tucker's Point Club Hotel will open in 2008.

The song "Tucker's Town" on Hootie & The Blowfish's album Fairweather Johnson refers to this town.
