The N8 Group consists of the eight most research-intensive universities in northern England. Rather than being a lobbying group (such as the Russell Group), it is a research partnership intended to enhance collaboration between the universities in the group. The N8 universities undertake more than £650 million of research income per annum and employ over 8,200 academic staff, thus making N8 the largest research-pooling partnership ever undertaken in the UK.[1] N8 also works closely with industry to ensure businesses have an efficient and effective route to access world-class research from 8 leading universities through a single point in key markets.

Research
The group has initially been focusing on five areas of research:
- Ageing and Health;
- Energy;
- Molecular Engineering;
- Regenerative Medicine;
- Water;
N8 was awarded grant funding of £6 million from The Northern Way Growth Fund in March 2007 to set up 'virtual' collaborative Research Centres around each of these themes.[2] Each Centre is led by an academic director, and is supported by a business development team.
The themes were chosen to build on existing research within the partnership which have the potential for economic and social benefit and aim to deliver £25 million of research funding and 140 new collaborations with industry by December 2010.
N8 has exceeded expectations with current achievements standing at £22.6 million of research funding and 165 new collaborations with industry, already higher the number total expected.
