Character casting and development

Nuttall was eighteen when she was cast in the role.[1] In 2004 Nuttall quit the serial in order to pursue a singing career and expand her acting profile.[2] Her decision to quit came after performing in front of 35,000 football fans and Manchester United's home ground, Old Trafford, during the Vodafone Cup.[2] Speaking of her decision to leave the serial Nuttal stated: "The decision to leave is something I have been thinking about for a long time. I will have been playing Chloe for four years this Christmas and although Emmerdale has been a fantastic experience, I feel that it's time for something new."[2]

Whilst interviewed by the Metro, Atkinson has stated that she didn't get Chloe's maneater label, adding: "It's funny because all my headlines include the word 'maneater' and I have only snogged two, no three, members of the cast on-screen. [...] I'm a bit fed up of being called a soap siren."[3]

Storylines

Chloe arrived in December 2000 for an interview at Chez Marlon, run by Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), Kathy Glover (Malandra Burrows) and Rodney Blackstock (Patrick Mower). Tricia Stokes (Sheree Murphy) wasn’t happy at Chloe’s arrival, jealous that Marlon liked the pretty waitress. Chloe started making friends instantly and got on well with Charity Dingle.

Chloe soon became Charity Tate’s (Emma Atkins) confidant, and Chloe was amazed when Charity told Chloe about her affair with Zoe Tate (Leah Bracknell). Charity and Chloe soon moved in together and Chris Tate (Peter Amory) annoyed Chloe, as he tried to find out the identity of Charity’s secret lover, but Chloe didn’t reveal anything.

Chloe and Scott Windsor (Ben Freeman) started going out together and moved in together during 2002. Chloe was delighted to learn than Scott was jealous of her and Marlon, even though there was nothing going on between them.

When Syd Woolfe (Nathan Gladwell) moved in with Scott and Chloe, he started causing trouble between the two. He slept with Chloe, leading to Scott breaking up with Chloe after finding out. She moved into Home Farm, but got back with Scott in early 2003 after she felt sorry for Scott having to drink with Viv Windsor (Deena Payne). Viv was unhappy about Scott reconciling with Chloe and sacked Chloe from the cafe. She later moved back in with Scott and Syd.

Meanwhile Syd had started seeing Yolanda, a lap dancer from a club he’d been to with Scott and Robert Sugden (Karl Davies) while Chloe was away. Chloe was jealous of Syd and Yolanda's relationship. She still fancied Syd, and tried to resume their affair, despite being back with Scott. After Syd and Yolanda split up, Chloe started flirting with him. Syd, however, wasn’t sure about having an affair with his best mate’s girlfriend again and rejected Chloe initially. She later did a lap dance for Syd.

He turned up at Home Farm, while she was looking after Jean Tate (Megan Pearson), and they got passionate on the sofa, leaving Jean unattended. Jean fell to the floor, and hurt herself. Chloe and Syd found her, but Chloe didn’t want to risk her job by going to the hospital. She hid Jean's injuries instead and lied to Syd about going to the hospital. Syd and Chloe’s affair continued, but Zoe was worried about her daughter’s constant crying while on holiday. Chloe said it was probably just teething. An accident at Home Farm, however, led to some shocking secrets being revealed. Debbie Jones, who was babysitting Jean, left her unattended and soon she was injured for the second time in weeks. This accident was more serious and Jean was taken to the hospital. It looked like she might not pull through. Scott and Chloe's relationship ended for good when Scott came forward as Jean's father. Chloe was devastated that Scott hadn't told her and, in revenge, kept quiet when Zoe was questioned about how Jean broke two ribs. Syd, however, felt guilty and made a statement about Jean falling to the floor because Chloe hadn't strapped her into her car seat properly. Zoe was cleared and promptly sacked Chloe, warning her not to ask for a reference.

Her relationship with Syd didn't last as she craved better things - a wealthy man. She drove Syd away with her behaviour and, in spite, told everyone that he hit her. Syd begged her to tell the truth but she refused.

Chloe moved in with Carl King (Tom Lister), and they had a one night stand when Carl and his girlfriend Chastity Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) had a row. Chloe thought she and Carl were now an item and was horrified when he returned to Chas. Chloe pretended her night with Carl had meant nothing but secretly began a campaign to get Carl back by pretending to be Chas's friend. She soon started causing trouble when she convinced Chas that Carl was seeing another woman and Carl's ex-wife, Colleen, was sending her poison pen letters. This culminated in Chas punching Colleen and in return, Colleen told Carl not to let Chas anywhere near their children.

Chloe went to work for the Kings, and despite flirting with Jimmy King (Nick Miles), tried again with Carl, who was now single. Carl's dad Tom King (Ken Farrington) approved of her, particularly when she announced her "pregnancy". Unfortunately, she wasn't pregnant - she had just said she was to trap Carl - but soon sensed he wasn't happy and wanted to get back with Chas. Worse still, Chas realised Chloe was responsible for the poison pen letters that broke them up. Chas humiliated Chloe, half drowning her in a fountain to make her tell Carl and his family the truth - she wasn't pregnant and never had been - before punching her and half drowning her in a violent showdown and warning her never to return. Disgraced, Chloe left the village on Good Friday 2005.

Reception

For her portrayal of Chloe, Nuttall was nominated in the category of "Sexiest Female" at the 2005 British Soap Awards.[4] Radio Times included Chloe on their feature profiling their favourite bunny boilers in soap opera.[5] Of her duration they opined: "Mercenary and malicious, conniving Chloe caused mayhem in the Dales by having an affair with her boyfriend's best friend, endangering a baby's life, sending poison pen letters to herself and faking a pregnancy to ensnare a man."[5] They also added: "With as much contempt for women as she had lust for men, Chloe was the very model of a treacherous woman."[5] Victoria Kennedy of the Daily Mirror branded Chloe a "bitchy sex kitten".[1] James Ellis of the Metro brands Chloe as a "man-eating character".[3] Evening newspaper Yorkshire Evening Post brand Chloe a "gold digger" after her story lines involving the King brothers.[6] Lorna Cooper of MSN TV listed Chloe of one of Soap Opera's "forgotten characters" and brand her love life as complicated because of her many unsucsessful relationships.[7]
