The Queensland Teachers Union was established in 1889 and is one of the oldest trade unions in Australia. Its primary focus is representing its 40,000 members in the Queensland Government's preschools, primary schools, secondary schools, special schools, senior colleges, TAFE colleges and other educational facilities. The union claims to have 95% membership of eligible members [http://www.qtu.asn.au/NextStepCouncil_0904.pdf] which is very high when compared to a national average of 23% of the Australian workforce.

The union is affiliated with the Australian Education Union, however it operates entirely in the Queensland industrial relations system. Despite the fact that the union will not be affected directly by the WorkChoices legislation QTU members along with members of the Queensland Independent Education Union recently condemned the changes proposed by the Howard Government.
