Te Poi

Te Poi

Te Poi is a small village in rural Waikato, New Zealand, nestled at the base of the scenic Kaimai Ranges. Te Poi is part of a thriving farming area, particularly for dairying, thoroughbred horse breeding and cropping.

Te Poi was the site of the Sunny Park-Hinuera Cooperative Dairy Co known for its casein production. In 1983 Sunny Park buildings were auctioned off after the merger with the Waikato Dairy Company. Te Poi village has weathered the loss of the factory well, due to its central location. The village is serviced by a garage, a cafe, a pub/restaurant and many other small businesses nestled within Te Poi.

The village has a primary school. Older children go to Matamata by bus (10 minutes) for secondary schooling. Te Poi remembers some of its past sons with its WWI memorial hall built in 1922, then the WWII memorial hall added on later.

Te Poi has a public tennis court.

From Te Poi, it is 35 minutes to Tauranga, 35 minutes to Rotorua, one hour to Hamilton, two hours to skiing at Mount Ruapehu on the Central Plateau and two hours to Auckland. There is also good trout fishing nearby.
