Habra ( _bn. হাবড়া) is a city, a municipality and a police station of Barasat sadar subdivision [ [http://www.wbcensus.gov.in/DataTables/01/Table-3.htm District-wise list of statutory towns] ] in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is an administrative subdivision.

History

Under British rule it was a base for Royal Air Force fighters. It was also the first municipality in West Bengal to be governed by the centre-right Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP. Fact|date=February 2007

Geography

It is 45 km from Sealdah Station and 22 km from Barasat on the Sealdah-Bangaon branch line of Eastern Railway. [Eastern Railway time table] It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway syatem.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Habra had a population of 127,695. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Habra has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 74%. In Habra, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Politics

In 2006 Assembly elections, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya of CPI (M) deafted his nearest rival Tapati Dutta of Trinamool Congress, who had won the 2001 election defeating Amitava Nandi of CPI (M) for the Habra Assembly seat. In 1996, Baren Basu of CPI (M) had defeated his nearest rival Abdul Hamid Mandal of INC. In 1991 and 1987, Kamal Sengupta (Bose) of CPI (M) defeated Biman Dutta of INC. In 1982 Nirode Roy Choudhury defeated Biman Dutta of INC. In 1977 Nirode Roy Choudhury of CPI (M) defeated his nearest rival Krishnadas Chattopadhyay of INC.After 2008 Municipal election, TMC defeated Left heavyly presently The municipality is run by TMC.
