Brantford Airport Airport codes|YFD|CYFD, also known as Brantford Municipal Airport, is a registered aerodrome located convert|4|NM|abbr=on|lk=in west southwest of the City of Brantford, in The County of Brant, Ontario, Canada. Brantford Flight Centre is the fixed base operator (FBO) run by the Brantford Flying Club, and provides flight training, maintenance and charters. Their fleet consists of Cessna 152s, Cessna 172s, and a Piper Aztec. The aerodrome hosts the United Way air show every year at the end of August, featuring the Snowbirds and other airplanes from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, including one of two airworthy Lancaster Bombers left in the world.

The City of Brantford has recently been looking at the possibility of closing the aerodrome, but this move has been widely opposed by local citizens, the tenants and users.

In May 2007, Brantford City Council held a Public Forum to learn more from the public, regarding their views on the Airport as an essential/necessary Service for the City. Many presentations made clear points that growing Cities require Airports as part of their fundamental Infrastructure, to attract and retain Corporate Investment.

In January 2008, Brantford City Council voted unanimously to support the inclusion of $1.9 million in planned Airport Infrastructure upgrades in the Capital Plan for Fiscal 2008. This will allow for repaving the Main Runway that Corporate aircraft typically use, plus a second Runway that was last paved in the 1940s.

The airport is classified as an airport of entry by NAV CANADA and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency. CBSA officers at this airport currently can handle general aviation aircraft only, with no more than 15 passengers.

History

While Brantford has had a public aerodrome since 1929, it opened at its present location on November 11, 1940 as a military flight training facility. It wasn't until April 27, 1970 that aerodrome lands and management duty were transferred from the federal government to the municipal level.
