Shotts

Shotts is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. As of the 2001 census, the population was 8,235. [http://www.scrol.gov.uk/scrol/browser/profile.jsp?profile=Population&mainArea=shotts&mainLevel=Locality] It was reputedly named after the legendary giant "Bertram de Shotts".

Shotts was known for its mining. In the 1960s there were 22 coal mines in Shotts, but all are now closed. Shotts is the home of the former world champion pipe band, the House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band.

Shotts also has a high security, long term, prision which is located between Dykehead and a neighbouring town Salsburgh, it is also situated on the same road as Hartwood.

The local football team, Shotts Thistle are a highly successful outfit and boast International footballer Shaun Fallon in their ranks.

Transport links

Shotts has a railway station on the Shotts Line, between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley and is one mile from the M8 motorway halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, so it is popular as a dormitory town.
