Career

Coaching career

Metsu took the Senegal national football team to its first ever FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan in 2002 where they surprised everybody by beating France in the opening game of the World Cup by one goal to nil. They qualified from the group stage and made it to the quarter finals only to be beaten by Turkey in extra time thanks to a golden goal from İlhan Mansız which made the score one goal to nil to Turkey. After Senegal had defeated France in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup, the president of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, declared a national holiday in Senegal to celebrate the team's success in defeating the defending World Cup champions.

He was the manager of the United Arab Emirates national football team. On 22 September 2008 he resigned the position after the UAE lost two World Cup qualifiers in a row. On 30 January 2007 he made history with them by leading the team to become the champions of Gulf Cup of Nations.

However, this was not Metsu's first achievement in the United Arab Emirates, he has also coached Al Ain FC and in 2003 for the first time in the club's history, they won the UAE domestic league and the Asian Champions League. Only months after that he left them to take up a job with Al Gharrafa in Qatar, where he led them to winning the domestic double and dominating Qatar's football championships.
