New York City Department of Education . It receives supplementary funding from TheGilder Lehrman Institute of American History .The High School of American Studies is located on the
Lehman College campus, one block from theBronx High School of Science , in the Bedford Park section ofthe Bronx .Due its location at Lehman College the school is often improperly referred to as "Lehman," especially by students at the nearby Bronx High School of Science. This abbreviation is frowned upon by the school's students due to the fact that that name has been traditionally used by the Herbert H. Lehman High School which is both nearby and is considered to have not as good of a reputation. Acceptable abbreviations include "H-S-A-S," "The High School of American Studies" or most commonly "American Studies."

History
American Studies was designed as a small school for about four hundred students. It was created in

(New York City previously had three specialized high schools,Brooklyn Tech ,Bronx Science , and Stuyvesant, besides LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. The three new schools were created to provide more opportunities for students beyond the previous three specialized high schools.)
