Hugh Cavendish, Baron Cavendish of Furness

Hugh Cavendish, Baron Cavendish of Furness

Richard Hugh Cavendish, Baron Cavendish of Furness, FRSA (born November 2, 1941), who usually uses the name Hugh Cavendish, is a British Conservative politician and landowner. He owns Holker Hall, and its surrounding estates, that overlook Morecambe Bay in Cumbria. The property became part of his branch of the family's inheritance via his grandfather, Lord Richard Frederick Cavendish.

He was created a life peer as Baron Cavendish of Furness, of Cartmel in the County of Cumbria by Margaret Thatcher in 1990 and is second in line to the dukedom of Devonshire (he is not expected to inherit, as he is much older than the present duke's son, who married in March 2007). Cavendish married Grania Mary Caulfield in 1970 and they have three children. He served as a Lord in Waiting (1990-1992).

He is the titular Abbot of Furness and he is the Chairman of the Holker Estate Group. He has also chaired the Morecambe and Lonsdale Conservative Association (1975-1978) and the Board of Governors of St Anne's School, Windermere (1983-1989). He is currently a director of Nirex Ltd (since 1993) and was the High Sheriff of Cumbria (1978) and a member of the Cumbria County Council (1985-1990). He is also currently employed at an accountancy practice in the City of London.
