The Money Well

The Money Well

"The Money Well" is a Scrooge McDuck comic strip story written by Carl Barks.

Storyline

Scrooge and his nephews are at his Money Bin where they find out that The Beagle Boys are using oil rigs to steal Scrooge's Money. Scrooge and his nephews use the secret tunnel to bury the money on a homestead that he bought but due to an error based on his poor eyesight he accidentally put the money on the land of Blackheart Beagle. The Beagle Boys discover this and become legal owners of Scrooge's money. After Scrooge buys a new pair of glasses he pretends to be the valet of The Beagle Boys until he finds out information on their grandfather. The Beagle Boys are wise to Scrooge's intentions however and they tie him up after Blackheart arrives. Blackheart confesses to his grandsons that he never owned the land and Scrooge seizes the opportunity to escape after pretending to shine The Beagle Boys shoes. After making his getaway Scrooge goes to the land and files a claim on that land and gets his money back. Blackheart and the Beagle Boys try to file the claim before but their rush trying to beat Scrooge to it results on them being arrested for reckless driving.

Trivia

Despite his appearance Blackheart is never referred to by his actual name. He is just referred to as Grandpa Beagle in this story. When this story was first written it was not yet revealed that Blackheart and Grandpa Beagle were the same character (and it may not even have been Barks's intention).

This story is used as a reference to The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck where Scrooge mentions buying his glasses in Scotland in 1885.

Also The Beagle Boys mention the aforementioned plot of land where Blackheart and his wife used to hide from the law was also used in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.

This story could be passed off as a sequel to Only A Poor Man.

This is the first appearance of Grandpa Beagle.

Fort Duckburg is mentioned for the first time in this story.
