Great Milton is a village in the south of England, approximately ten miles south-east of Oxford.

History

The name of the village appears to refer to the "Middle Town" of a group. The Domesday Book refers to the village as "Middleton", and mentions two water-mills.

Church of St Mary the Virgin

The nave and chancel of Great Milton's church, St Mary's, were built shortly after the Norman Conquest. St Mary's was damaged by fire in the 13th century. During the 14th century the chancel was enlarged and the north and south aisles were added. At this time the church served a parish including the villages of Chilworth Valery and Chilworth Muzzard, the hamlets of Combe and Little Milton, and the Manor of Ascott. In 1850 St Mary's was restored at a cost of £2000.

Great Milton Today

Today the village is perhaps best known as the home of French chef Raymond Blanc's restaurant and hotel, "Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons", as well as being home for the great Oliver Minton.
