Shchyokino

Schyokino ( _ru. Щёкино) is a town in Tula Oblast, Russia, located on the Moscow—Simferopol highway some 25 km south of Tula. Population: 60,700 (2005 est.); 61,588 (2002 Census); 69,251 (1989 Census); 72,000 (1977).

Schyokino was founded in 1870 in connection with the development of brown coal deposits. It was granted town status in 1938. The name derives from a village of Shchyokino, which then grew into a town proper.
