Surat Thani Railway Station

Surat Thani Railway Station

Surat Thani Railway Station (SRT Code: SRN) is the main railway station in Surat Thani Province. It is located on S.R.T. Southern Railway line km. 635+106, on the east bank of Tapi River in Tha Kham town, Phun Phin district. Surat Thani Station first opened in 1915, and was originally named "Phun Phin Station". The name was later changed to "Surat Thani Railway Station".

History

In World War II, the IJA (Imperial Japanese Army) used this station as a base for military activity. The station and the Chulachonklao Bridge (Then called as Tha Kham Bridge) across the Tapi were both bombed in May1945 by American aircraft. The R.S.R. (former name of S.R.T.) built a new station, called Surat Thani 2 Railway Station, on the Northern bank of Tapi River opposite the old station.

Surat Thani 2 Railway Station was demolished after Chulachonklao Bridge was opened for traffic with ceremony on 16 February1953 and the opening of the new building for Surat Thani Station in 1954.
