Steven Melvyn Hanley (born June 11, 1979 in Whitehaven, England) was a rugby union footballer who played on the wing for the Sale Sharks. Regarded as a genuine Sale legend amongst fans (who voted him into the Sale Sharks 'Hall of Fame' in 2007), Hanley scored 104 tries in 191 games. Hanley is currently celebrating his testimonial year, marking his 10th season of service to the club.

In the 1999 Five Nations Championship Hanley won his only England cap against Wales. He scored a debut try and suffered a broken arm, but is largely remembered for him being run over by Craig Quinnell.

Hanley is the all time top Premiership try scorer, with an impressive 75 tries to his name.

In July 2008, Hanley announced his retirement from Rugby due to a back injury and has since taken up a role with the Sale Sharks community team. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/my_club/sale/7513572.stm BBC SPORT | Rugby Union | My Club | Sale | Injury ends career of wing Hanley ] ]
