Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell

Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP is an American law firm of approximately 700 attorneys with 11 domestic and one overseas office. Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell was formed on October 2, 2007, after the combination of Texas-based Locke Liddell & Sapp PLLC and Lord Bissell & Brook LLP, a national law firm headquartered in Chicago.

Merger

Management of each firm first proposed the merger in May 2007, and partners of each firm approved it on September 12. Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP will have gross revenues of approximately $400 million, placing it within The American Lawyer’s “AmLaw 100” annual rankings of the top U.S. law firms.

History

Legacy Locke Liddell was founded in 1891 in Dallas while legacy Lord Bissell was founded in 1914 in Chicago. The Chicago arm of the post-merger LLB&L was known for its strengths in insurance and reinsurance litigation, regulatory and transactional work, particularly in the Chicago market. It also had launched and fostered a London office to service insurance-related matters. It was known as an insurer-side law firm that tended to represent insurance companies and not policy holders. The Dallas arm was known for its work in the real estate investment trust and energy sectors.

Miscellaneous

In 2000 the firm settled a lawsuit which had asserted that "it aided a client in defrauding investors," for $22m, the client being a company belonging to Russell Erxleben. Bush and once mooted nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States is currently a partner in the litigation and public policy group at LLB&L. She was once co-managing partner of legacy firm Locke Liddell & Sapp.

LLBL should not be confused with the now defunct law firm of Lord Day & Lord.
