Principles

Here are some of principles of Maum meditation, as described in "The Way To Become A Person In Heaven While Living", a book written by the founder of Maum meditation, Woo Myung. [2]

"The Universe is the truth which is the never changing and everlasting existence. Everything comes from the universe and it is the origin of every creation in the universe. However, human beings are self-centered, they are not one with this existence.

People take pictures of everything – including elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and everything in society- through seeing with the eyes, hearing with the ears, smelling with the nose, tasting with the mouth, and feeling with the body. Moreover, they store such pictures in their minds. They live through these pictures they have stored in their minds, and thus, they live in the false world, the delusional world.

For example, the existence of Manhattan is real as it is, but a picture of Manhattan is not the real Manhattan. Living within their mind worlds they have created is false. This mind world is a non-existing delusional world. People live in their mind world as the main character of their movie. There is no life in that film. The main character living in that film which is within oneself does not have life, and only lives according to the script.

The purpose of Maum Meditation is to teach people how to discard their pictures, which are fake and enable people to become the world – perfect Truth. It enables people to live as the Truth without worries but with freedom." [3]

Method

Maum meditation has 7 levels of subtraction [4]

  • Level 1 - Substracting the remembered thoughts
  • Level 2 – Substracting the images of myself, images of my human relationships and myself
  • Level 3 – Substracting my body
  • Level 4 – Substracting my body and the Universe
  • Level 5 – Substracting my body and the Universe
  • Level 6 – The self disappears by substraction and I become the universe
  • Level 7 – Subtracting the illusionary world of pictures and myself living in that world

The goal at the end of completely subtracting every layer of the mind is to reach the Truth. [5]

Education in Maum meditation

In Korea, instructors have lectured on Maum meditation to employees at the Bank of Korea, Ms.Baek Hospital, Samsung, MBC Culture Center and Kia Motors. Under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education, Maum meditation has been giving lectures and promoting the practices to teachers. University professors have also been promoting the meditation technique at the Association of University Education.[citation needed]

In 2008, Dongshin University introduced Maum meditation as a course in its curriculum. [6]

Also, Dr. Charles Mercieca, President of the International Association of Educators for World Peace, a United Nations NGO[7], declared that "the philosophy of Maum Meditation is wonderful because it is capable of leading the entire world to permanent peace."[8]

Thousands of people are practicing Maum meditation at centers all over the world, in countries such as Japan, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, England, Brazil, Argentina, United States etc. [9] [10] [11] [12] As of 2011, there are 311 centers world wide.[13] The main center is located in Non-san, South Korea.
