Pontrilas

Pontrilas

Pontrilas is a village in south Herefordshire, half a mile from the border with Wales. It is in the parish of Kentchurch and lies midway between Hereford and Abergavenny.

The village name means 'bridge over three rivers', as the River Dore, Worm Brook and Dulas brook meet here. The main A465 road skirts the west of the village.

The village once had its own railway station and cattle market. The station served two lines: the main Cardiff to Crewe railway line, which still operates, and the Golden Valley Railway line that terminated in Pontrilas until its closure in 1957. The station itself was closed in 1964 and is now a guest house and self-catering cottage. The village once boasted a pub, "The Scudamore Arms", but it was burned down in the 1970s. The Manor House Pontrilas was once one of the homes of the Baskerville family.

The largest business in the village is Pontrilas Timber, which has been there since 1947. There are also a number of other smaller businesses. These are based in the three business parks strung along the A465.

The neighbouring villages include; Ewyas Harold, Llangua, Dulas, Wormbridge, Kilpeck, Bagwyllydiart, Abbey Dore and Howton.
