Kushva

Kushva

Kushva ( _ru. Кушва) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, situated in the Ural Mountains near Yekaterinburg. Population: 34,300 (2005 est.); 35,555 (2002 Census).

Originally a mining town founded in 1735 at the Blagodat Mountain to explore its iron ore deposits, it achieved the town status in 1926 and was then renamed from Kushvinsky Zavod (lit. "Kushva works") to Kushva. Currently it is stagnant and its population is decreasing as most of the mining industry closed down.

A crater on Mars was named in honor of the town.
