Selbu is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway.

Selbu was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Tydal was separated from Selbu January 1, 1901.

The administrative centre of the municipality is Mebond.

The name

The Norse form of the name was "Selabú". The first element is the genitive case of the old name of the lake Selbusjøen (Norse "Seli"). The last element is "bú" n 'district'. (The old name of the lake is probably derived from the word "seli" m 'harness' - the lake is long and narrow.)

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1991). It shows three selburoses.

The municipality covers 1,254 km², which consists of:
* Freshwater lakes [Including the Selbusjø or Selbu Lake, which is over 58 km² in area, making it the largest lake in Sør-Trøndelag and the 17th largest lake in Norway.] and rivers, 85 km², 6.8% of the total
* Agriculture 31 km², 2.5%
* Woodlands 308 km², 14.7%
* Swampland and mountains 830 km², 66.0% Biggest lake: Selbusjøen - 60 km² - 160 meters above sea level
Highest mountain: Fongen - 1,441 meters above sea level

*In the north: Trondheim, Malvik and Stjørdal
*In the east: Meråker and Tydal
*In the south: Tydal, Holtålen and Midtre Gauldal
*In the west: Melhus and Klæbu
