Redlands High School is located in Redlands, California, United States. Founded in 1891, it is the oldest public high school in the State of California still functioning on its original site and the first "unified high school" formed from three elementary school districts. Its campus includes the historic Clock Auditorium built in 1928.

History

For much of the school's history it was the only public high school for the cities of Redlands, Loma Linda, Yucaipa, and Highland. Today it is one of four high schools in the district and still includes students from all the cities. The population was split in 1997 when Redlands East Valley High School opened. As for the ethnic distribution of the school, 43% is classified as White (not Hispanic), 30% Hispanic or Latino, 12% Asian, 9% African American, 4% Filipino, .9% Native American or Alaskan Native, .7% Pacific Islander, and 4% other or not classified. The third high school is Redlands Citrus Valley High School, which is set to open 2009, and a continuation school, Orangewood High School.

Alma Mater

Verse:
Where The purple snow-capped mountains
Reach the clear blue sky
Lies our cherished Alma Mater
Our dear Redlands High.

Chorus:
Alma Mater, Alma Mater
Deep graven in each heart!
Our loyalty, unwavering, true
When e'er from you we part.

Naration:
There, beneath the God made heavens,
Beautiful both night and day,
Lies our school, our Alma Mater,
Which inspires us that we say,
"In our hearts we love thee dearly,
In our minds though art firmly set,
Though we must leave thee sometime
forever,
Thee we shall never forget"
(chorus)

Publications

Newspaper

The Hobachi is the official Redlands High School student-produced newspaper. It is also known as "the echo of Redlands High School." The Hobachi is published monthly, and includes articles on scholastic sports, education, teacher profiles, student profiles and current events. It is distributed free to RHS students because of strong advertising support by Redlands-area businesses. It is also usually almost in full color, and includes pictures of the student body. Students are interviewed at the nearing of the end of the school year for positions on the following school year's newspaper staff. The Hobachi is an award-winning newspaper, winning numerous Gallup awards every year, as well as scoring highly in scholastic newspaper evaluation. During the 2007-2008 school year, the staff won 35 George H. Gallup Awards, setting the new school record for one year. That is considering the fact that they sent one less issue than previous years.fact|date=May 2007

Yearbook

The "Makio" is the Redlands High School yearbook, with 103 annual volumes as of 2006-2007 school year. "Makio" has won gold in yearbook competitions, and was recently featured as one of the publisher's best yearbooks, along with another from California, and another from Colorado. The yearbook ranges from around $65 from the beginning of the school year, to $100 at the end of the school year. Also like the "Hobachi", students are interviewed for positions in three categories: business, staff that is dedicated to selling advertisements to businesses around the area; copy, staff that is dedicated to writing the entries in the yearbook; photography, staff that is dedicated to taking the pictures that are featured in the yearbook; senior ads, creating picture pages (for the seniors that buy them) on the computer that show the seniors life in pictures. Also, there are positions for editors for each section on the yearbook. The editors consist of Editor In Chief, Sports Editor, Business Editor, Copy Editor, Senior Editors, Organizations Editor, Senior Ads Editor, Photography Editor, Public Relations Editor, Layout Editor, and Underclassmen/Faculty Editor. The editors are chosen by the class advisor; editor in chief must have a minimum of at least one year of editor, and is recommended be in the Makio class since freshmen year. There is an interview process in which student must be interviewed for all staffs of the class. Current students of the Makio must also re-apply to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity at getting the position of their liking. There are usually 7-8 students per staff, not including the editor, on Business, Photography, Senior Ad, and Copy Staff.

With changes to the traditional school year within the Redlands Unified School District, applications to interview for the different staffs of the Makio takes places soon shortly after first semester ends. Applications for Editor In Chief usually happen a few weeks before the EIC is announced, which is usually the week before spring break.
