Hareid is a municipality in the county of Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

Hareid was separated from Ulstein as a municipality of its own July 1, 1916.

It is situated on the coast of Sunnmøre, on an island named Hareidlandet, which it shares with the municipality Ulstein and of which it is regarded by many as the capital.

Hareid is an important traffic-junction on Sunnmøre and is connected by ferry to Ålesund and Valderøy.

Name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Hareid (Old Norse "Haðareið"), since the first church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the name of the island "Höð" (now Hareidlandet), the last element is "eið" n 'isthmus'. The meaning of the name of the island is unknown.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from 1985. It shows three arrowheads, to commemorate the Battle of Hjørungavåg which took place in the municipality.
