History Of Occupational Therapy In India

Mrs. Kamla V. Nimbkar[2] [nee Elizabeth Lundy]brings the great services of Occupational Therapy in India and Asia. Mrs. Nimbkar had obtained a degree of B.A. in Economics Statistics from Columbia University. she was a social activist. once she came across with an article regarding Occupational Therapy by Miss Helen Willard, and then she realized that this is something India is not aware of but needed essentially.[3] she then went to United States, & enrolled for Occupational Therapy course at Philadelphia school of Occupational Therapy. After attaining her degree she came back to India. and worked in K.E.M. Hospital.in 1950 K.E.M. hospital decides to start Occupational Therapy school under Mrs Nimbkar. The first ever school of Occupational Therapy in India and Asia was started in 1950 at K.E.M. hospital, which was recognized by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy.[4] Mrs. Nimbkar retired in 1957 from the Occupational Therapy School, Bombay. In 1957 an 2 year diploma course was affiliated to Bombay university, which then converted to a three year degree course then the first ever masters program started in 1979 in India. and in this way the new dimensions of Occupational Therapy In India discovered.

Occupational Therapy In Modern India

Occupational Therapy is now a day emerging like a major professional course in India. Hundreds of students every year get admitted in various recognized colleges to attain their degree in Occupational Therapy. In India the duration for Bachelors of Occupational Therapy course is four and a half year and for masters its 2 years. Masters[5] in various streams like Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Rehabilitation, neurology etc are available In India. some universities in Utter Pradesh has also started with the phD courses in Occupational Therapy.

Regulating Body

In India there is no central council which governs Occupational Therapy. the biggest National Body which governs OT in India is AIOTA (All India Occupational Therapy Association).
