O'Neill's is a chain of Irish-themed (Celtic) pubs in the United Kingdom owned by Mitchells & Butlers of Birmingham. The only part of the UK in which there are no O'Neill's pubs is Northern Ireland. A large number of its pubs are in London, and always have been since the company was formed. It welcomes customers with the Irish phrase Ceád Mile Fáilte.

History

O'Neill's was formed in 1994 by Bass[1]. Allied Domecq operated Scruffy Murphy's, which opened in Edinburgh in 1993 and had 43 by 1996.

The first one to open was in Aberdeen. The next one to open was at Covent Garden in 1995. By 1996 there were 52 and it was Bass's most successful pub chain. By 1996 Bass was opening more than one a month, and had spent £40 million on the pub chain. Ten opened in September 1996. Bass owned Caffrey's, which was launched by the company around the same time as O'Neill's. By late 1996 Bass was opening a branch of O'Neill's every week.

By the end of 1997 Bass had over 250 Irish-themed pubs. Bass bought Scruffy Murphy's from Allied Domecq in 1999.

By 2000 there were around 500 Irish-themed pubs across the UK.

By June 2003 Mitchells and Butlers had 91 O'Neill's.

Operation

The pubs it owns specialise in Irish music (such as The Pogues), food and drinks - Guinness, Smithwick's, and Caffrey's Irish Ale.
