Newark Charter School is a public charter school located in Newark, Delaware that serves children from kindergarten to eighth grade. As of June 2010, 1286 students were enrolled in the school. The school uses the Core Knowledge curriculum.

The school is open to all residents of the state of Delaware. If the number of applications for any openings in the school exceed the space available, a lottery is used to select students. The lottery gives preference to:

  • Children of Founding Members
  • Children of employees of Newark Charter School
  • Siblings of children already currently attending the school and that will be in attendance the next year
  • Siblings of children conditionally accepted by the current lottery
  • Children residing within a 5-mile radius of the school[1]

History

Newark Charter School's charter was approved by the Delaware State Board of Education in April 2000, and the middle school opened in September 2001. Shortly after the school opened, their students voted "the Patriot" as their mascot after the September 11 attacks. The charter was renewed in June 2004. An elementary school was opened in August 2007, and the charter was once again renewed in January 2009.[1]

In 2010, the school was named a 2010 National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education, one of fourteen charter schools nationwide to receive the award.[1]
