History

The New Hamburg Fire District is located on the Eastern shore of the Hudson River in the southern end of the Town of Poughkeepsie within Dutchess County, New York. The New Hamburg Fire Department, which started with only one Engine Company (No.1), began on April 1, 1917. Their original equipment consisted of a hand-drawn chemical wagon. Between 1929 and 1930, New Hamburg went through a heavy growth period. The railroad was expanded to include two additional tracks, two additional bridges and required many new streets and roads. In 1931, to meet the demands of this growing area, the New Hamburg Fire District was created. A new firehouse was built on Point Street and served as Headquarters to the many dedicated volunteers that faithfully served the community. The area the Fire District covered grew rapidly over the years and extended to approximately a 5-mile (8.0 km) radius. Engine Company 2, also known as East End Engine Company, was established and joined the Fire District in 1949 to better cover this growing residential and commercial community. This facility, rebuilt in 1982, is located on Route 9D and continues to serve the Fire District. By 1966 it became apparent that with nearly 100 volunteers, New Hamburg Engine Company 1 had outgrown its facility on Point Street. The new firehouse was built on Channingville Road in 1968 and became the District Headquarters.[2]
