History

Show debut

The pilot episode aired before the 2005 regular season and it had show founder Steven Miranda and Nipper Knapp as its hosts. According to Steven, the show was launched because he wanted his critic voice to be heard when the Minnesota Vikings traded Randy Moss for virtually nothing to the Oakland Raiders. Chrissy Weathersby and Tricia Miranda also contributed during the first episodes of season 1 until Jeff Ellis became the permanent co-host.

Show development

The show is now airing its sixth season. It is usually between 100 and 120 minutes long (as opposed to Season 1 40min shows) and airs twice a week during the NFL season and once a fortnight during the off-season.

On December 2007, The Orange County Register, third largest newspaper in California after the Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Chronicle, published an article [1] on what the podcast is about and how it is recorded. Since the start of the 2009 NFL season they have written about fantasy football for The Orange County Register, and have presented the NFL weekly preview on Sky Sports (since 2009) and Sky Sports News Radio (since 2010) to comments on upcoming games.

As the show has evolved throughout the years, also NFL-related guests have been interviewed on the show, such as Los Angeles Times NFL columnist Sam Farmer, NFL Network analyst Jason La Canfora or NFL Total Access host Rich Eisen.

The show

Also known as "NFL R&R" or "NFL RandR", its typical segments are:

  • Intro/summary
  • NFL news
  • Main topic (as stated on the show title) part 1
  • Rant time (rarely Rave time)
  • Main topic part 2
  • Tangets (interweaved with all of the previous segments)

Show hosts

  • Steven Miranda-Steven is a life-long Dallas Cowboys fan who started the NFL Rants and Raves show to "bring American Football to the world."
  • Jeff Ellis-Jeff joined Steven as the permanent co-host in the show's first season. He has gone from being a casual football fan to an official football fanatic. He often asks questions that casual fans might not know the answers to so that he and the fans can get an explanation of how the NFL works.

Rants and Raves isms

  • "Just sayin...is all" - This phrase should always be split between the two show hosts (example-Steven says "Just sayin'" and Jeff replies with "is all")
  • "HWMNBN" - Pronounced "hum-num-ba" and standing for "He Who Must Not Be Named" this refers to any player who is constantly in the news for things OTHER than actually playing football and must not be on an NFL roster at the time. Past players who have received this tag include Terrell Owens and Brett Favre.
  • "LONDON BABY!" - Normally proclaimed by Steven as the time nears each season for the duo to travel to London, England for the international series game. Their adventures in and around London are legendary on the show and each season brings new stories from the annual trip. (also used for trips to Las Vegas, Nevada as in "VEGAS BABY!")
  • "Whhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?!?!" - Added as a sound drop in season 6, Steven made a recording of his daughter saying "what" with a high level of disbelief. Both Steven and Jeff use this drop when something completely outrageous happens such as a wager line that they completely disagree with or an odd choice of starting quarterback.
  • "Bumblebee Tuna" - The show nickname for the third-string quarterback. His name is irrelevant since he has such a small chance of making his team succeed while at the helm.
  • "Fat man with football" - Affectionate term used on the show for an offensive or defensive lineman who tries to pick up a loose ball after a fumble and run with it.
  • "Ship all banged up" - A quote by Will Smith from the film Independence Day to suggest that a player or team is suffering from injury.
  • "Gura" - Term used by the guys to designate how much guaranteed money is part of player's contract in the NFL.
