The museum was founded in 1906 by the ethnographer Hipollyte Müller.
It is an ethnographic, archaeological and historical museum, covering the territory of the former province of Dauphiné.
In a 17th century monastery, visitors can visit the chapel of Sainte-Marie-d'en-Haut with a rich baroque decoration.
The permanent exhibits have English translations.
The museum is located at rue Maurice Gignoux, a street of the Bastille hill.
