Mor Sæther

Mor Sæther

Mor Sæther (1793–1851), was a Norwegian cunning woman, a herbalist. She is one of the most known one within her profession in Norway. She was active in Oslo in about 1820-1851. Her name means "Mother Sæther", after her marriage to a man named Sæther.

Sæther was on several occasions trialed for quackery, but the last time she faced this charge, she was given official permission to prectice medicine and was thereby made an officially licensed cunning woman. Mor Sæther was praised by Henrik Ibsen, and was the object of a poem by Henrik Wergeland, whom she famously nursed at his death bed.
