Miriam Schmierer née Baker (20 August 1899 – 29 September 2011) was an Australian supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Australia, she is also the oldest person from the state of Queensland. She assumed the title when John Campbell Ross died on 3 June 2009. She was the last-known surviving Australian who was born in the 19th century, as well as the last-known Australian born before the founding of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Biography

Miriam Baker was born in Queensland. She was married to Grenville Schmierer. In 1961, she retired with her husband to Hervey Bay, Queensland to live near their two sons, Austin and Mervyn. Thirty years later, she moved alone to the Master's Lodge, a retirement living home where she resided in up until her death. She outlived all of her siblings, including her oldest sister who lived to be 103.^[1]

Longevity Records

• On 3 June 2009 John Campbell Ross died, Miriam Schmierer aged 109 years 286 days became the oldest person in Australia.
• On 3 March 2010, Miriam Schmierer aged 110 years 195 days was added to the Gerontology Research Group's list for Guinness World Records.
• On 29 September 2011, Miriam Schmierer died, aged 112 years 40 days.^[2]
