Early life

Michael Palmer was born in 1968 in Singapore as a child of news presenter Vernon Cyril Palmer. [1] He attended the Saint Andrew family of schools -- Saint Andrew's Junior School, Saint Andrew's Secondary School and Saint Andrew's Junior College -- which is affiliated to the Anglican Church of Singapore. After finishing his GCE A levels at St Andrew's Junior College, he went on to read law at University College London, graduating with LLB Honours. Since 1995, he has been employed in Harry Elias Partnership as a legal consultant, becoming a partner in 1998. [2]

Political career

Palmer was elected in 2006 as a People's Action Party (PAP) MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, an important post currently occupied by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean. In the 2011 elections, he was elected as a Member of Parliament in newly created Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC), after emerging victorious from a three-cornered fight that saw the Workers' Party of Singapore and Singapore Democratic Alliance vying for the seat.[2] Palmer was nominated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for the post of Speaker. After a election conducted amongst parliamentary members, he gained the position. [3]
