Mewar University is an autonomous body promulgated by the Government of Rajasthan through Act. No. 4 of 2009, passed by Rajasthan Assembly (Govt. of Rajasthan). The University is further approved by the UGC under u/s 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956, with the right to confer degree under u/s 22(1) of the UGC Act vide letter No.F.9-15/2009 (CPP-I) dt. 30 March 2009. Mewar University is promoted by Mewar Education Society (MES). It is controlled by a Board of Management, constituted by MES.

Mewar University has the unique distinction of being the only University in the District of Chittorgarh (Rajasthan). The University is established to benefit students from the nook and corner of the India and other countries and is of specific benefit to the students of nearby districts like Bhilwara, Neemuch, Rajsamand, Banswara, Dungarpur, Pratapgarh, Bundi, Udaipur(Rural), Kota etc., who do not have access to quality higher and technical education in the vicinity. The University fills up the void in the field of higher, technical and vocational education in the Mewar region which, in spite of being rich in terms of agriculture, industrial and business growth, has lagged behind in education as compared to the peer districts like Udaipur, Ajmer and Jaipur.
