- Mental health day
-
In many workplaces throughout the First world, including but not limited to the United States and New Zealand, a mental health day is where an employee does not come to work and takes a sick day, not because of physical sickness, but because he or she does not feel like coming to work. In most places, no law requires employees to produce a medical certificate for only one day of absence, nor do most employers demand such verification, meaning that the employer has no way to verify the truth of the claim. It is also quite difficult to get an appointment with one's doctor at such short notice.
In 2010, the National government of New Zealand proposed a law that will allow employers to require a medical certificate for even one day of absence, thus phasing out the mental health day.[1]
