Publishing history

Martinet is first mentioned in Ed Greenwood's article "The Nine Hells Part II" in Dragon #76 (1983).[1] He also appears on a list of devils in the Monster Manual II later that same year in 1983.[2]

In the second edition of the game, Martinet appeared in the supplement Guide to Hell (1999), written by Chris Pramas.[3]

In third edition, Martinet appeared in the Book of Vile Darkness (2002).[4] Martinet was briefly mentioned in Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells (2006).[5]

Description

Martinet's job is to clean up the frequent political messes of Baator. His influence has stopped several wars from breaking out among the lords, and his diplomacy has ended even more conflicts. Martinet has an extremely level head, and he never flies off the handle. He has withstood the tirades of Baalzebul and Mephistopheles without raising an eyebrow, and he always has a cunning retort. While he is not greatly powerful himself, he is feared because others know he is the voice and mouth of the Dark Lord of Nessus.

Relationships

Martinet was a pit fiend who serves in the court of Asmodeus as his constable.

Martinet served as the escort for Asmodeus' consort Bensozia as she was leading a routine inspection of the layers. While they were travelling across Stygia, Levistus ambushed them and proposed that the Queen of Hell become his consort if she helped him depose Asmodeus. The staunch queen refused harshly and passed him by. Infuriated, the Lord of the Fifth killed Bensozia and her pit-fiend bodyguards while Martinet managed to escape.

Bel has curried some favor with Asmodeus by spying on other lords and passing on the information to Martinet.
