The headteacher is Dr. Rose Hegan. The school is situated just off the Stockport Road (A626) on the outskirts of Greater Manchester, near the River Goyt.
History
Grammar school
The co-educational comprehensive school was originally Marple Hall County Grammar School, a grammar school, which was built in 1960 by Cheshire Education Committee on the demolished remains of Marple Hall, a manor house once owned by Christopher Isherwood the novelist and John Bradshaw who signed the death warrant of Charles I and whose family also owned the house. The ruins of the house are still visible just outside the grounds of the school. These two figures give their names to the two main buildings of the modern school.
The grammar school later had separate boys and girls schools. Marple Hall County Grammar School for Girls opened in 1965 and had 750 girls in 1967, and 1000 by 1971. Marple Hall Grammar School for Boys had 1000 boys in 1972. Both schools had four-form entries.
Comprehensive
The school was converted into the mixed sex Marple Hall County High School in September 1974 with a nine form entry. The joint headmaster, Derek Saville, was appointed in September 1973. It was originally to be called Marple Hall County Comprehensive. From April 1974, the school was administered by Stockport MBC. The new school taught Russian in the sixth form and had 1900 boys and girls, with 450 in the sixth form. Only the first year in 1974 had a comprehensive intake, and the last (from 1973) selective intake left in 1980.
There has been a high turnover of maths teachers in recent years. This was blamed on a 'national' shortage of maths teachers.
Following Mr Saville's retirement, the sixth form was closed in 1989 after the arrival of the new Head, Margaret Cuckson. Miss Cuckson remained at Headteacher until 2004 when she was replaced by Mrs Lesley Calderbank who oversaw record GCSE results in July 2010. The current Head, Dr Rose Hegan, took over in September 2010.
Timetable
Marple Hall is split into two different weeks, blue week and red week. Some lessons you get only twice a fortnight and others you get a lot more.
Uniform
Recently Marple Hall School has updated its uniform from a jumper and charcoal black trousers to charcoal black trousers, a blazer bearing the school's emblem and a tie showing the pupils' house colour.
School Houses and Reward System
Marple Hall has recently updated its teaching system. Not only are pupils split into forms of their age group, they are also split into houses, with pupils from ages ranging from 11–16. Linnet is yellow, Fernilee are green, Errwood are red and Derwent is purple.
The reward system was changed to get pupils to treat being in the house in the manner of a healthy competition. For good behaviour a pupil is rewarded a house point. A blue piece of paper with the pupils name on it. They then put that in their houses collection box. Then that houses house point total will be tallied up and the house with the most house points at the end of the year wins the house cup. There is also prizes for individual pupils who earned the most house points. The prizes are still undecided but are items on the lines of cinema tickets, Alton Towers tickets, iPods and bikes.
