Mari Pehkonen (born February 6, 1985 in Tampere, Finland) was a member of the 2006 and 2007 Finnish national women's ice hockey team.

Playing career

Finland

She competed in the Finnish League (Sm-Sarja) with club team Ilves (Tampere), finishing third in league scoring and second in goal scoring (19 goals and 14 assists). She led the team to a second place finish in 2004-2005 in the National Championship tournament. In 2005, she won an Under-20 Finnish National Championship with Ilves Under-20 club team finishing as top goal scorer. She was a member of the Under-22 National team from 2002–2005 and was the leading scorer for two out of three seasons. Pehkonen finished the 2004-05 season second in the Finnish Championship league in assists (14) and ended the year third in the league in points (33) and fifth in goals (19). A five-year member of the Finnish Championship league, Pehkonen helped her club team (Ilves) to a second place finish in the Finnish championship league tournament.[1]

Prior to her time with the Under 22 team, she played in Finnish League in 1998-2003 with club team Tappara (Tampere), where she was named team MVP in 2002-2003, and scoring leader in 2003-2004. In addition to hockey, she was also was a member of the Finnish Under-17 National Soccer team in 2001. She was selected to play for Finland in the 2007 IIHF World Championships, where she registered a goal and an assist in Finland's five games. At the 2008 IIHF World Champhionships, she scored three goals and two assists and was voted Team Finland's Most Outstanding Forward.[2]

NCAA hockey

Pehkonen was a sophomore transfer from the University of Minnesota-Duluth where she played hockey her freshman year. She tallied eight goals and six assists in 27 games as a Bulldog. As a sophomore, she played in 34 of the Friars' 36 games. She led the team with 18 goals. Her 29 points were the most by a sophomore, and the third highest total on the team. In addition, she led the team with 12 power-play goals and scored 10 power-play goals in HOCKEY EAST play (tied for first in the league). Sheed the Friars in game-winning goals with four.
